A school with a luminous biblical name, for the poorest children in the largest slum in Africa. It truly is a ray of light and a source of hope for the children who come here.
Every day a hundred children from the poorest families in Kibera come here for their share of knowledge and of porridge. By the standards of the slum this is a very good school: it has electricity, furniture, textbooks and qualified staff. There are four classes, all taught by professional teachers. The timetable includes Swahili, English, grammar, the world around us, and arts and crafts.
The school follows Kenyan educational standards and serves three purposes: education, social support and health.
Every one of these children has known hunger, so a special feeding programme has been developed for them. They are fed twice a day.
Once a month a visiting medic examines the pupils and provides basic care. The school keeps a first-aid cabinet with essential medicines, restocked every month. Every few months we run a mobile clinic for a fuller examination, and where necessary the children undergo further tests at a clinic in Nairobi.
