Medical facilities in Burundi are scarce: there are around 200 doctors in the entire country. Average life expectancy is low and child mortality is among the highest in the world. The Batwa are one of the poorest and most vulnerable communities in Burundi, and for most families even a small medical expense is a serious problem.
When a child falls ill, parents often have to choose between seeing a doctor and other things they cannot do without. As a result many children go without medical help until their condition becomes critical.

Health insurance for Batwa children
Each month we pay for health insurance for the children in the programme.
USD 50 a month gives 50 children access to medical care — one dollar per child.
That small sum lets children see a doctor, get treatment, and not be left alone with an illness simply because their family cannot pay for the visit.
