Teaching children from the poorest families to read, write and count
Our School under the Sky in Madagascar opened on 8 June 2026.
Twenty children from the poorest families in the local slum had their first day of school here.
For most of them these are the first lessons of their lives: they are learning to read, write and count for the first time. What millions of children take for granted is, for them, a rare chance to change their future.

On paper, education in Madagascar is open to every child from the age of six. The reality looks different.
Many families live below the poverty line and cannot afford to send a child to school; in some areas the nearest school is too far away, or there is none at all.
As a result thousands of children grow up with no education whatsoever.
The School under the Sky exists for exactly these children. Twenty of them study here now, none of whom could attend lessons before.

Lessons take place in the open air. Starting them required no expensive school building: it was enough to set up a space to learn in, provide the children with materials and bring in a teacher.
The format lets us open classes quickly wherever children have gone years without access to education.
